Ah , the luvvies for Obama are now surfacing !!!

elvis parker

I agree. That chap Obama is so much nicer I mean we know so much about him and all his relevant experience....

powellite

So...Damon hates the idea of a 'hockey mom' facing down Vladimir Putin, but Obama...? What would he do? Wave one of his speeches at him?

Frankly, I'd love see Palin get her teeth into Putin - she'd really sort him out.

It's arrogance like this which reminds us why actors should stick to acting.

Jonathan

Matt who? Why do we have to be subjected to this kind of nonsense of 'celebrity' interviews?

The opinion of Hollywood A (or B) listers is worth what, exactly?

I mean after all, they are, like, sooooo in touch with reality....

Oliver G

It's great having hollywood elitists as poltical enemies but what i find funny is that Mr Damon has internalised the absurd neocon assumption that Russia needs to be 'faced down' instead of left alone to run their own affairs.

Ian

I have to say I completely agree with Matt Damon. I was for McCain before but now I'm (reluctantly) for Obama - I draw the line at creationism and global warming denial. And he's perfectly entitled to speak up, good for him.

powellite

ian, can you point us to where Palin's embraced creationism and denied global warming?

DJT

I've been a tory since i've been old enought to think about such things. But i wish so much that us British Conservatives would stop assuming that our sister party is the GOP. I almost married into a republican voting party in Georgia who remind me so much of Palin. You have to beleive me that this womans political views will not be based on things that rational people (on the whole) like us would base our decisions on. Almost every issue will have her judgement clouded by religion. I will never forget the day i first showed my then in-laws a £10 note! The one with Charles Darwin on! I was called monkey boy for the rest of the week! They honestly beleived that the world was 4000 years old and why didnt i marry this girl? Well because she thought it was stupid to bring children into the world at a time when the judgement was nigh!

Now my point isnt that Palin is this family, or that every republican thinks like my ex. My point is just that a lot more do think this way than you realise. Equally the Democrat party are not the US equivalent of Labour. Rememeber the US election 2004? When John Kerry was filmed hunting? I cant image many in the Labour party inviting the cameras to do that!

Im truly baffled as to why more people from the British "right" dont want Obama for president. Surely after all the damage of the past 8 years globally we should just be hoping for someone who everyone accross the world might not despise. Not another pair who seem to think war is a good thing! I knew McCain was another fool the day he proclaimed he knew where Bin Laden was and would find him...All good and well except you dont and you wont!

And please dont think me some raging liberal, I despise the left mafia BBC and supposed Holywood elite trying to throw their morals on us all. Whilst unlike most with an opinion, I actually studied climate change at university (02-05) and was assured from day one by my department that it was very unlikely that man had an effect on reccent climate change. So that alone should make me so right wing mad man in some lesser informed peoples opinions.

You could be similarly snobbish about a B-movie actor and a grocer's daughter facing down Russia.

Oh, wait a minute...

Ian

Powellite - since she would like creationism to be taught alongside evolution then it seems likely that she believes in it - but it's frightening enough that she even suggests it. As for global warming, she has apparently decided it is not man made. That strongly suggests to me that she is not particularly concerned about it but in any case it's not a promising start.

Michael Caplan

Who is this Matt Damon? He is an ignoramous.

Full marks to DJT (12:34pm) quote:

"You could be similarly snobbish about a B-movie actor and a grocer's daughter facing down Russia. Oh, wait a minute... "

What is this about dinorsaurs supposedly believed to be alive 4000 years ago? I am not a bible expert but I know the bible gives no clues as to how old the earth is. How long is a day before there is a day?

Creationist may believe that Adam and Eve were created 6000 years ago but that's another matter.

Interestingly, if I remember accurately, - it was claimed by DNA analysis that Europeans were created from only twelve individuals. That provokes the question who were the twelve created from? Perhaps Smart Alec Damon could answer.

powellite

Thanks Ian. If that's what she's said (which I don't necessarily think it is) then I probably broadly agree with her. Does that make me unfit for office?

Michael Caplan

Sorry, I credited DJT with the comment "You could be similarly snobbish about a B-movie actor and a grocer's daughter facing down Russia. Oh, wait a minute... "

It should of course have been Phil Whittington September 12, 2008 at 12:34 PM

I agree with DJT.... why do Tories stick by the GOP?
Why are people sticking up for Palin on this thread? What has she done that makes anyone want to defend her?
Have you not seen her first TV interview?
In 10 mins she pretty much said she would go to war with Russia and stuck by Bush's decision to send special troops into Pakistan (why McCain chastised Obama for saying!)
She had no idea what the Bush doctrine is. She came across like an amateur.
As for calling for no abortion, not even when pregnancy has been due to rape or incest.... come on..... would centre right Tories vote for this in Britain!!!

Ian

Powellite - that is what she said. If you agree with her, that doesn't make you "unfit for office" but it does mean that you wouldn't get my vote. It's ludicrous to want to waste young children's time learning about "ID"/creationism when there are so many better things to be teaching them and it's a short step from saying global warming is not caused by man to deciding to do nothing about it.

Derek Madd

He appears to know a lot about her for someone who doesn't know anything about her.

Derek Madd

Also, I'm not convinced he's that scared. He doesn't look scared. He looked a lot more scared when he was confronting his emotional demons in Good Will Hunting.

Matt Wright

He might be right but even scarier is asking movie stars what they think!

Dean

Never mind Matt. Take a long lie down in a darkened room and contemplate a life in Canada with Susan Sarandon, Babs and a dozen Baldwins.

Watervole

Palin comes over really well but if she's a creationist and a christian fundamentalist then that gives me the heebie-jeebies. I agree with DJT - we shouldn't naturally assume that Rep. and Dem. = Con. and Lab. It's a different world over there and I'd rather not get in to bed with someone who feels comfortable with burning at the stake and trashing the north american ecology.

Clearly, to deny evolution is to sacrifice reason. However, Sarah Palin does not support teaching creationism in the school system, as was smeared by the liberal left. She merely advocates for the school system to allow the idea of Intelligent Design to be open to discussion. I don't think it's a radical suggestion. It's something we, as humans, have pondered since the birth of our conscientiousness, and evolution does nothing to disprove God.

Matt Damon, and any Hollywood loving liberals that will listen, eagerly and passionately embrace a, blogger created, rumor about Sarah Palin's personal beliefs. The only problem is, there is zero factual evidence to support this claim. What it does do, is bring to light the idea that a candidates personal beliefs are relevant. Where were all the celebrities when Senator Obama's personal beliefs were in the spotlight? Here is a man that, for 20 years, openly followed and defended Reverend Jeremiah Wright, and "good friend" Father Pfleger. Even after Obama came to his defense the good Reverend stated that Obama was lying about being ignorant to the Reverend's position. Reverend Wright said that honesty was his 1st priority, and that Senator Obama was suddenly lying and denying like a true politician. Indeed, if Senator Obama's personal beliefs were the subject of a trial, there is enough factual evidence in video and personal testimony to have him convicted of racism, sexism, and socialism.

It's ironic to me how the left, effortlessly, recognizes how frightening it is when others choose to turn their back on real evidence, in an attempt to cling to their beliefs. Yet, they don't recognize their own impulse to deny the evidential while embracing any unsubstantiated idea that supports what they want to believe.

The fact that Governor Palin supports the idea that schools should "teach the controversy" over evolution does not tell us which side of that controversy she personally is on, if any. Possibly she only thinks it fair that the creationist majority in the United States who pay for the schools shouldn't have their beliefs systematically ridiculed by those schools without their side of the case being heard. That doesn't sound exceptionally radical.

More radical perhaps is the suggestion that the one thing we want to know about the person who holds the nuclear codes is their beliefs about when the dinosaurs died out. There are perhaps a thousand other things one might want to know about that person first that would be more pertinent to the responsibilities of the post. Mr Damon's outburst is a thinly veiled attempt to establish an electoral ban on a religious basis.

Perhaps he should be more straightforward and simply suggest that most American Christians should not be allowed to be President.

And those who suggest above that evolution is synonymous with rational thought would do well to give consideration to the fact that this not only involves calling half of Americans idiots, but according to a BBC poll, 22% of Britons - and from personal knowledge, nearly all practising muslims. That's not very good politics.

anyone who believes that dinosaurs have a place in more recent history
