Unfortunately, Tom Elliott is a most uninspiring choice. Peter Robinson and the DUP are likely to rally the Unionist vote in order to stop Sinn Fein winning the position of First Minister. Elliott has nothing in terms of personality or ideas (so far anyway) that could counter the DUP strategy.

Banquo's Ghost

Well, all I can say is that it can't be much joy being the new captain on the bridge of a sinking ship. The UUP is now playing in Division Two with the DUP and Sinn Fein/IRA being the "Old Firm" in Ulster's Political Premier League.

Owen Paterson's very ill advised and counter-productive electoral pact at the recent General Election of the Conservative Party with the UUP when Empey was their leader was the death blow to that once great party. I cannot see it making any significant recovery under a new leader.
