Kevin Rudd eats his ear wax

Remember Gordon Brown apparently picking his nose at British Prime Minister's Question Time and, well, eating what he excavated?  This video of Kevin Rudd, the man who wants to be Australia's next Prime Minister, shows him eating his ear wax.  This video is not for the squeamish!

NOT EARWAX!!! He scraped with his fingernail at a deep fold near the canal. Notice how his hand went up before the scraping as if he was making sure something was there or getting ready to be covert. Going after earwax is more random and stoic - he was purposeful. I suspect something was hidden there for later consumption.

I'm specifically curious about whether infections (if so, which ones)
cause increased ear wax? If so, what function would the ear wax serve?
I've noticed increased ear wax when I'm sick so I'm just looking to
understand why this might happen. Or is it dust?
