Excellent protest against unfairness. More power to them and I hope they pressure the government into changing the law by doing this.

Topshop don't owe any tax though. These petulant middle-class idiots don't even know what they're protesting about, but why should we be surprised? After all, when Labour (and even some coalition) MPs don't know the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion, why should a few art-school types in skinny jeans and body piercings?

Tax avoidance arises from two things:

1) Motive
2) Means

The motive to avoid tax is that it's too high here and that the business or individual could pay less somewhere else. The means to avoid tax are provided by a complex tax system that encourages loopholes and favours those who can afford to employ people to get them around the rules.

This means that tax avoidance can only be tackled by the government by tackling 1) Motive and/or 2) Means.

Tackling the means is just a case of simplifying the tax code and closing loopholes, which everyone can support. Tackling the motive requires an acceptance of Cowperthwaite-school economics, ie cutting the taxes so that businesses don't have the motivation to want to offshore in the first place. A simplified tax code and lower taxes should be complimentary policies; they aid each other.

Tackling one of either "motive" or "means" would lead to less tax avoidance. Tackling both would be transformational for our economy.

I cannot see that they will achieve anything worthwhile by this. I have always loathed Polly Toynbee and I have even less love for her now. Neither Topshop nor the Government will pay the slightest bit of notice to this act of stupidity.

How hypocritical! A public service employee who is probably highly paid and looking forward to a gold plated pension courtesy of little old me and millions like me, is complaining about someone who earns his money and pays tax on it and provides many real jobs for people. That is jobs from earned income unlike public sector jobs from unearned income. If Phillip Green's wife is avoiding tax then I am sure that the Coalition will look into it as they have said they will be looking into tax avoidance. Why weren't these people out on the streets when Labour were in power? After all any tax avoidance happened on their watch.

Indeed true Matt, and Tax EVASION is a crime and is punished, even by jail in the worst cases, e.g. Lester Pigott. Accountants and Tax Lawyers make a very good living expoliting the difference between the two.

That woman in the video looks like a Drama teacher.

I would just like to compliment Matt Woods on that summation.

Everybody who has the ability to do so avoids paying unnecessary tax. That includes Ed Miliband for example and the parents of many of the protestors.
