In the 1979 election the Liberals took a bit of a pounding, losing three of their 14 seats. If they had not had a stunning by-election gain in Liverpool Edge Hill a few weeks earlier it could have been much worse. I am intuitively certain they would have lost between four and six of the 13 seats they would have been defending.
