Smears from Republican partisans are getting more and more irrational and content-free (see Fredrik's comment above). I'm a lifelong conservative of the kind the GOP ideologues are driving away in droves. I would warn UK Tories and others not to follow the doomed example of the GOP, neocons, and Religious Right. Fewer than 1 in 5 American voters are willing to label themselves Republicans today. A legacy of torture, debt, recession, bigotry and violations of civil liberties is nothing worth emulating or preserving. The current GOP is the rightwing version of Michael Foot's Labour Party.
