On Radio 4's Today programme Tim Montgomerie argued against the idea that a successful Tory Party would sit on the Left or sit on the centre ground or, indeed, move Rightwards. A successful Conservative Party would be broadly-based. It could, he argued, be thought of as 'Full Orchestral Conservatism'.

Tim wrote about this idea a few months ago.

On last night's ‏BBC Westminster Hour, Carolyn Quinn talked to Tim Montgomerie, Stephen Tall and Hopi Sen about the political year

On last night's Westminster Hour three bloggers dissected the big political events of the year. Stephen Tall for the LibDems, Hopi Sen for Labour and Tim Montgomerie for the Conservatives.

Tim argued that...

  • Jeremy Heywood's investigation of the Mitchell police log was more Inspector Clouseau than Sherlock Holmes.
  • He said that Labour had wasted 2012 - doing nothing to show that it could be again trusted with taxpayers' money.
  • He said that senior Tories hoped a more left-leaning Liberal Democrat would succeed Nick Clegg before the next election in order to avoid a large gathering of left-leaning voters around Ed Miliband.
  • He also defended the welfare squeeze as a necessary deficit reduction measure and as a way of helping to 'make work pay'.
