I don't think he advanced his position at all, the fact is that a lot of those voting for him are doing so because he is the Conservative candidate and even where many support 42 days they see him as being more likely to do things to cut public spending and taxation, most support his position on Capital Punishment.
Labour and Liberal Democrat supporters will still tend to wonder about what the effects of him being an MP in terms of fiscal and monetary matters are.
Other candidates proposing to run are campaigning on other issues - so whether he wins or not, he is failing to make the campaign a matter solely of the issues he raised.
He would have been better running as an Independent on the issue and then rejoining the Conservative Party after - inevitably party labels affect the issues people vote on. Even so he would still be seen as being a Conservative candidate rather than simply a candidate on the issues he is campaigning on.
