Cable has a one track mind on this. Retail banks can fail simply in the way that Northern Rock did: making too many silly loans and becoming over-reliant on short term wholesale finance to provide them. It's not all about City dealing rooms.

I feel really sorry for Cable because the slide into dotage and self-caricature is an sad thing to witness. Time to gently tell him that pipe, armchair and pension is the way to go now. Poor old chap.
